Abstract

Biblical counseling and crisis intervention are unique when compared to secular theologies. Understanding the differences and defining characteristics of Bible-based therapy allows the counselor to address the spiritual needs of their clients. However, there are controversies that must be acknowledged so that a sound foundation upon which to develop one's crisis intervention skills. In relying on the Bible in crisis intervention and counseling, a client can be returned to safe functioning levels and pre-crisis coping levels. Simultaneously, reestablishing a relationship with God should be a prevalent goal.

Introduction

Biblical counseling and crisis intervention are both subjects with which all of God's followers should be accustomed. In an exceedingly secular world, the need to remind those in suffering of the love and guidance of Jesus is ever present. With the rise in technology, people are more aware of the numerous crisis events that occur daily. The need for Bible-based guidance is growing.

In researching the topic, numerous resources were considered and referenced. As biblical crisis intervention is often considered a sub-discipline within biblical counseling, and at the very least shares many common traits, the topics share many resources. Many concepts are similar and the terminology can often be interchanged. When necessary, a distinction is made between the two but often the similarities are dominant. However, there are many concerns, questions, and misunderstandings relating to biblical crisis intervention and counseling.

These misunderstandings can cause additional damage if not rectified. In understanding Bible-based crisis intervention and counseling, it is important to have a strong working definition upon which to develop. Once a solid definition is attained, understanding the need for and defining characteristics of the discipline will aid in dispelling misunderstandings.
