Consequences of an Older Population

Introduction

Geriatrics requires a great deal of social and economic attention in terms of social security and health budgets. Out of all the threats that the human society has to go through, including the natural disaster or the civil war, the ageing of the human population outranks every other potential danger. According to research, it is expected that in the next half of the century, the population aged 60 or above is expected to be doubled. Thus, the impact of this transformation will affect every domain of the society, including the economic growth, family compositions, housing and accommodation, statistics of health and disease, taxations, technological advancement, and several others (Ohayon, 2007). This pressure is reflected on the increasing demand of the health care and pension and the decrease in size of the portion of the people who contribute towards the state funds which are that meet such demands.

However, this impact will cause an adverse effect on the lifestyle and the advancement of the nation. Nevertheless, the elderly will require extensive care, attention and the time of their preceding generation, this will going to affect the outputs and the economical advancements in the country. United Nation expand a meeting in Madrid to ponder over the facts and the fast pace at which the geriatrics population is growing. The results of the meeting highlights that the group of people aging 60 and over is raising at the speed of 10% to 20% in the time frame of 2000 and 2050. However, the fastest growing age group is of the people who are less than 80 years, in which the women outnumber the men by two to one (Ohayon, 2007).
