My thanks go out to all who have helped me complete this study and with whom this project may have not been possible. In particular, my gratitude goes out to friends, facilitator and family for extensive and helpful comments on early drafts. I am also deeply indebted to the authors who have shared my interest and preceded me. Their works provided me with a host of information to learn from and build upon, also served as examples to emulate.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Background
The term conflict management is often used synonymously with conflict resolution. A conflict management program can be defined as a program with industrial components that is implemented in an industrial system to decrease the number of conflicts and antisocial behaviours that surface within that industrial system. Such programs began in the 1960s when community mediation groups and peace advocates introduced alternative dispute management skills into the legal system. Conflict management programs have expanded during the past 2 decades in an effort to counter the increase in violent acts and shootings in the industries.
A review of the literature regarding the effectiveness of conflict management programs suggests that while many corporate promote them within their organizations, more empirical evidence is needed to support such programs. Narrative reviews of conflict management programs have been popular and suggest that they do decrease antisocial behaviours.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of research under this study is to investigate the strike actions with reference to the comparative transport strike in UK and Nigeria. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a middle ground possible for this and other industrial relation matters. The focus of this study will be on threatened strike actions for example, during a threatened strike action by tanker drivers which could have cut off fuel delivery to the point of sale, the UK government also threatened to bring in soldiers to drive the tankers. But in Nigeria, such action would close down business operations; therefore it is important to determine the workability of various conflict management options for the government to manage strikes.
Scope of Study
The study will expand the boundaries of the existing knowledge about conflict management in terms of strike management and government response. Not many researches have been undertaken on such topics therefore, it will be an encouraging addition to the literature to analyze resolving the strike and make a two-way decision from which both parties are benefited.
Research Questions
What can the government do to avert crippling the economy through transport strikes?
How feasible is the labour strike action?
Which conflict management process is most effective in managing the threatened strike action?
