DIAL UP

Maximum pace is 56 Kbps in both main headings (upload or download) (called symmetrical) but normally you can't depend on a relentless stream any much quicker than about 2/3 rds that pace or about 38 Kbps (quite slow) (John 2009).

 

DSL

Occasionally & more unquestionably mentioned to as ADSL (asymmetrical digital subscriber line) (John 2009). DSL piggybacks on analogue telephone lines but drives a digital pointer over the line which values a distinct part of the unused spectrum.
