In The Joy Luck Club", Waverly's mom, Lindo, is the proud parent of a youthful chess prodigy. She takes great pride in Waverly's success at the art of chess. But a disagreement arises because Waverly is embarrassed whenever her mom shows her off in public. One day Waverly gradually explodes at her mom in the marketplace, telling Lindo that she shouldn't try and show off her youthful chess prodigy as if she had a part in Waverly's success.

In “Eat a Bowl of Tea” Wah Gay (Victor Wong) takes after a gambling club and has not observed his wife in China for about 20 years. She tells him sadly, “I wish I could give you some advice about marriage, but I don't know anything about it.”

But after she gets better, things aren't the same. Since the disagreement, Lindo isn't interested in her daughter's chess. She doesn't polish her trophies everyday, or make clippings her name in the paper.

In “Eat a Bowl of Tea” A matchmaker soon finds Ben Loy an ideal mate, Mei Oi (Cora Miao). They are married in China and then travel to New York. Wah Gay throws a dinner party for the youthful couple attended by all the men in the Chinatown community, integrating Mei Oi's father. She is delighted with the amenities of running water as well as telephones but almost immediately finds herself trapped in their residence with nothing to do. Ben Loy takes over the organization of a restaurant, a ...
