Tradition is a significant part of our life. There are some people who follows their tradition so extremely that they are even unable to recognize themselves. Why the people are cooking the rice in some certain specific ways? The reason behind is that their Grand ma has done always that way. Whereas other people hold their traditions above everything. Such kind of people have a specific programming in their minds that don't let them go away from their traditions even if they are giving some harmful results but they would.nt be ubderstanding it. Even these people can not differentiate the right and wrong as they are so blind in following their traditions that their memories directly igmores the negative parts of their traditions. In these short stories which are under discussion, "The Lottery," by Shirley Jackson and "Everyday Use," by Alice Walker, both the authors have given their ideas towards the traditions.

Everyday Use

“Everyday Use” is a famous and widely studied story of Alice Alker published in 1973. It talks about an African mother and her two daughters and illustrates the differences of Johnson and he shy daughter “Maggie”.

In this story "Everyday Use" the struggle over tradition begins when “Dee” comes home. She has now changed her name, the changed name that has been passed down through the family branches and now it is Wangero Leewanika Kemanja. After this clash another also started between daughter and the mother when "Wangero" wants the quilts that Maggie has been promised by Mrs. Johnson as a wedding present.
