Its part of the Knowledge Corridor, a section of New England that is particularly renowned for its high concentration of colleges and universities, the student population of the Knowledge Corridor is estimated to be at 120,000 throughout the entire area, and Hartford's student population is strong. The city itself is almost 400 years old and has quite an illustrious history, for a good period of time following the Civil War it was the nation's richest city (Allen, 1994).

The entire Hartford area ranks second in the entire country when it comes to per capital income - the only place that is higher is San Francisco, California. Hartford is situated between New York City and Boston. The city, today, is facing the struggle with a decreasing population base. Despite the fact that the city is the foremost insurance industry, many leading insurers have left the city. They have moved their businesses to other states and suburbs. From 19th century to 20th century, Hartford was a significant manufacturing city.
