Its part of the Knowledge Corridor, a section of New England that is particularly renowned for its high concentration of colleges and universities, the student population of the Knowledge Corridor is estimated to be at 120,000 throughout the entire area, and Hartford's student population is strong. The city itself is almost 400 years old and has quite an illustrious history, for a good period of time following the Civil War it was the nation's richest city (Allen, 1994).
The entire Hartford area ranks second in the entire country when it comes to per capital income - the only place that is higher is San Francisco, California. The insurance business started around in 1794 and was working with more than 35 insurance companies. Because of mergers and acquisitions in 20th century, the insurance business lost its importance. More manufacturing industries operating in Hartford include precision instruments, transportation equipment, computers, electric equipment and firearms. Hartford is an important centre for research, education and medical care. Hartford also includes Hartford hospital, Connecticut Children's Medical Center, and Saint Francis Hospital (which merged in 1990 with Mount Sinai Hospital).
Hartford is situated between New York City and Boston. The city, today, is facing the struggle with a decreasing population base. Despite the fact that the city is the foremost insurance industry, many leading insurers have left the city. They have moved their businesses to other states and suburbs. From 19th century to 20th century, Hartford was a significant manufacturing city. After the industrial revolution in 20th century, the Connecticut River established various major, favorable production innovations.
