Over the last three decades, the speed of health communication practice and research has expanded and increased drastically. Increased awareness of the range and incidence of health issues globally have ended up in the combination of research from disciplines like business, law, psychology, sociology, nursing and medicine. Professional and researches within health communication have developed numerous methods and tools for advancing systematic enhancements linked to the issues within the society in general and to the performance of healthcare facilities.

For the interaction between healthcare providers and patients the facilities providing healthcare are the most common sites. Institutional culture, conventions and norms generally influence the nature and character of the relationships amongst the stakeholders. Even though on the surface it might appear as though interactions between a patient and a doctor are simple, a complete nexus of entrenched norms colors the relationships.
