Introduction

Communication is a significant process and is considered to be a natural phenomenon of the human life. It starts with the beginning of the human life. The starting of the child's psychological development is the learning of communication skills. Deprivation of communication is the worst punishment after the deprivation of life. But the value of communication is not realized as exceptionally meaningful. The individuals utilize different styles of communication to convey their messages effectively. In the movie selected for the analysis, the communication process pays a significant role. The communication is the main base of the movie. Expressing wants, ideas, feelings and options effectively is only half of the communication process needed for interpersonal effectiveness (Katz, 2005). The other half of the communication process is listening and understanding what other is communicating to the receiver of the message. Listening is considered to be a complex and difficult method of communication which has three phases: the first phase is based on the ability of receiving all the signals verbal or non-verbal sent to the receiver (Daniels, 2007). The second phase is about comprehending that is to understand the meaning of the signals sent to receiver. Third phase is responding to signals that have been sent to receiver. In the movie, this aspect of the interpersonal communication is also present to a greater extent. The element of listening is portrayed in a very deep way.

The entire movie revolves around the main character who has been trapped in a phone booth and the process of communication takes place through the phone, as well as direct communication with the police standing outside the phone booth. The communication is an essential part of the movie and it helps in building up the suspense and the climax of the movie. The main character communicates with the villain, his wife and the police in different ways. There are numerous styles of communication that has been utilized in the movie. In this paper the three different styles positively utilized in the movie and the three different styles that have been negatively utilized in the movie has been discussed.

The interpersonal communication is the transmitting of a certain message between two communicators. The whole process involves a sender, a message, a receiver, its feedback and noise. The sender sends his message to the receiver through a certain medium; the receiver interprets the message and then gives a feedback. However if noise is created anywhere between the process then the message won't be properly communicated. This interpersonal communication can be direct and can also be indirect (Beebe, 2010).
