The novel 'Surfacing' is the story of a woman who is striving to find her father. The woman has been accompanied by a married couple and her lover. In the novel, the woman has recalled diverse events of her childhood. In the novel, the protagonist is striving to gather diverse clues that may help her find her father. During the efforts of finding her father, the protagonist was overtaken by her past. The novel is based on the theme of separation and feminism (Atwood, pp. 185).

Margaret Atwood's novel 'Surfacing' reveals the multifaceted question of individuality for females. For the protagonist, individuality or identity has become a difficult issue. It is because she has remained a sufferer of colonial powers. The protagonist has been colonized by the opposite gender in the society. The society in which she lives is a patriarchal society. The society has been colonized by Americans and the notion of cultural imperialism of Americans (Thömen, pp. 23).

Feminist along with the theories of post colonialist carve up much universal ground because of their inspection of voice, along with the point of subaltern within the society (McPhillips, pp. 14). Their analysis as well as their resistant against, power by the English male has guided to their coalition and applicable deliberations concerning the related issues, affects along with the strategies.

The similarities lie in their assessment of the tone, and the place of the inferiors in society. The critiques struggles of Feminist and post colonialist theories regarding the domination by the white male has led to the discussions about their similar problems (Das, pp. 6).

Since 1980s, different factors in the feminist postcolonial theory have been emerged. It has focused on the argument that women are colonized by both race and gender. The book has also explained how this joint colonial experience has left the victim with stance of dislocation. It, in turn, has led to a broken and split sense of self.
