Introduction

The reason for this essay is to approach the public health practice by demonstrating it informally. This essay critically analyses the clients, families and colleagues in the health care setting. The policies, guidelines and professional standards, which should be understood by the public, got shown in the essay. The health needs, which a family requires in a society be explained in this essay. There are certain strategies which got used, by the health care centres in order to help families who are in need of them. Surveillance and assessment of health and well being is a principal, and standard of public health nursing. The search for health needs involves developing relationships with groups, and individuals with the aim of improving health. Identifying those who are at risk and in need of further support is part of this process. The Healthy Child Programme (HCP) recommends that the new birth visit should be achieved between 10 and 14 days following birth.

The case

The case is about a first time mum who got seen on a new birth visit by the health visiting team as part of the universal service (healthy child programme). A holistic assessment must be done and it was seen that the mother was having difficulty with breastfeeding due to unyielding attachment, and was isolated as she was a new mum, and her husband had gone back to work, and her maternal parents lived 120 km away, and this left her isolated.

Client Analysis

Susan has to give birth to her first child. Every pregnancy has some problems which needs extra care for its cure. Similarly, Susan was also suffering from pruritic urticaria papules (PUPPP), which causes an irritating, itchy rash which is common in pregnancy. Her maternal parents live 120 km away from where she lives. Her husband has also gone back for work, which has created more problems for her. Susan finally delivered her first child. Giving birth is not easy, but bringing the child up is more difficult. Even her maternal family lives away from her place which has created more problems for her. Susan faced numerous problems in bring her child up. Holistic assessment identifies health needs, and builds trusting relationships as part of a process of empowerment. Nationally there is a decline in the numbers of health visitors which has impacted on the services children and families receive. The shortage of health visitors has led to multidisciplinary teams where community staff nurses maybe delegated a “low risk” client. Susan faced some societal issues as well, and it is the duty of health care to prevent her from social exclusion, social inequalities, and empowerment.
