Effectiveness of Chiropractic Treatment in the management of Fibromyalgia
Introduction
Advancement in medical research and technology has remarkably improved the quality of life for patients with chronic conditions. Approach to treatment of chronic diseases like cancer is determined after a conclusive diagnosis is made. Unfortunately, this has not been the case with patients suffering from fibromyalgia syndrome. Muscle pain is the symptom usually the highlight of the fibromyalgia. It generally occurs throughout the body, although it may begin in a region thereof, such as the neck and shoulders, and extended to other areas after a certain time. Often varies by time of day, physical activity level, climate, patterns of sleep and nervous exhaustion. Most people with FM say they always feel some pain. These people feel mainly pain in the muscles. For some people, pain can be quite severe. Almost all symptoms are common to other alterations. Although the result of general physical examination is usually normal and people have a healthy look, a careful examination of the muscles of people with fibromyalgia, reveals the touch sensitive areas at specific sites, called tender points. The points are hypersensitive areas of the body that are painful when exercised pressure on them. Although the disease affects close to 10,000 million people in North America, of whom 90% are women, poor understanding regarding the causes of the disease, poor and inclusive diagnoses, have resulted in general misconceptions by physicians that it is all-psychological. As a consequence, misconceptions affect their quality of life since they suffer emotional and social impacts including stigmatization and lack necessary care and support from physicians, families and friends. Chiropractic positive approach to fibromyalgia has drawn more patients into their care and patients have shown incredible improvement in the management of the disease. This paper explores the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment in the management of fibromyalgia symptoms.
Background
Although it is more common in adult women, fibromyalgia can also affect children, the elderly and men. The pain of fibromyalgia is generally widespread pain or burning. It is often described as a sore head to toe. Its severity varies from day to day and change location, becoming more severe in parts of the body that are most (neck, shoulders and feet). In some people, pain can be intense enough to interfere with ordinary daily tasks, while in others, cause only mild discomfort. Also, the exhaustion caused by fibromyalgia varies from person to person. It ranges from a feeling of slight tiredness to exhaustion a flu-like illness. Although FM does not cause deformities or affect longevity until he / it can manage the patient through treatment and medication (s) appropriate, FM can make life difficult on many levels. Although not thoroughly investigated the frequency of FM in the U.S. population, the most conservative estimates suggest that between 4 and 6 million people suffer from ...
