Children Stereotype and the Contribution of Disney
Introduction
In every society regarding any particular group of individuals, there are maintained certain perspectives. More commonly known as Stereotypes, these perspectives can play a major role in altering the behavior or approach of the individuals in a society towards other individuals or group of individuals. Children are the most vital element in a society and are most affected by these labels and taboos (Carlson, 2004). Because of their innocence and immaturity, children in any society adapt these stereotypes most quickly naive of the resulting consequences in various social aspects of their lives and personalities.
Discussion
Technology, particularly media has a lot of information to offer to these young minds. However, the fact cannot be ignored that media very often display and promote various unnecessary glamorous, materialistic and trivial values. Many Young minds watching such programs therefore are inspired by many unrealistic situations shown in those programs. These children then attempt to copy the characters, adapt the values reflected and the stereotypes included in those programs. All these elements have a huge power to be able to influence and alter their overall personalities, their lifestyles and their relationships with family, friends, teachers and individuals (Chick, 2002).
According to many scholars and psychiatrists, the fact that parents rarely realize and acknowledge the changes in their child's behavior as a result of picking up those stereotypes is very concerning. Through various different mediums and ways, be it films, soaps, magazines and their social circle, many children adapt these stereotypical values and try to adapt them consciously or sub-consciously (Fiese, 2000). This influence can be reflected through many ways including their dressing styles, their day-to-day conversations, the language they use, their approach and towards certain aspects and their behavior towards people.
