Child Labor Laws

Introduction

The study is related laws pertaining to child labor which refers to any work or activity that deprives children in their childhood. Indeed, these are activities that affect the mental and physical health of children and hinder their development. For that reason, it is imperative and essential that child labor laws should be consistent in view of rights and health of children as working in early ages can adversely affect the future of children.

Problem Statement

Child labor is a global phenomenon which no country or region is immune. Crises of all kinds that include economic shocks, armed conflict, natural disasters and AIDS/ HIV involves in the effect of pushing an increasing number of children to debilitating forms of work, drugs trafficking and sometimes as illegal and secret prostitution and other illicit activities which affect the future of children.

Majority children work because their parents are not able to provide them food or to the family alone as most of children do jobs to earn for the entire family. Hence, for employers, to hire a child is usually a good deal because they can easily exploit a child while leaving other workers on protest. Thus, to forbid child labor is therefore simply not a solution as the children would lose their jobs; their families have no more money (Cahn, 2008). Consequently, it is vital to make child labor laws as it guides in creating better working conditions for the children and at the same time giving them the opportunity to go the school, but the hard luck is that organizations do not follow these child labor laws. Furthermore, the main factors of child labor are:

Poverty;

Illiteracy;

Significant wage difference between adults and children;

Death or permanent absence of the father;

The level of rural underdevelopment;

Living conditions in poor neighborhoods of the city;

Inability of the school system to ensure future employment;

Families;

Parental employment.

Moreover, harsh conditions and task difficulty of work show the way to various concerns that include malnutrition, drug addiction, depression, premature aging etc. Besides it, most of the activities carried out by children at work place include the risk of rapid decline of their health. The reason of such is that the use of chemicals not only in the case of the footwear, textiles and the jewelry industry affects the health of child, but also in the agriculture industry which often carries intoxicates chemicals also affects the body of children (Fuller, 2003). In the carpet industry particularly in weaving, a child gets crammed into polluted dust wool and dark places which particularly damage the lungs and eyes of children. In addition, laws regarding to child labor are important as a working child cannot attend school and be normal destined to become an adult illiterate with no opportunity to grow in his social and professional life. In some cases, child labor also demoralizes the morals and dignity of children; thus, child labor laws are necessary.
