Introduction

This paper is based on a personal case scenario, in which a girl was neglected and maltreated by my mother.

Child abuse is most often described in terms of child abuse. Child abuse is further delineated into physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional/psychological abuse, and neglect. Violence against children is most often associated with physical abuse or with sexual abuse. Feelings of not being loved as mentioned in my case study may also be viewed as a benign form of abuse, especially if it results in a child death. Gender information on the identified perpetrator is not always collected, making it difficult to gather an accurate picture (Trickett, 2008).

Thesis Statement

Children who are victims of female-perpetrated abuse tend not to disclose to the degree they would if the perpetrator was male. This is especially true for children, who are victims of female-perpetrated sexual abuse.

Feeling of Loneliness

A woman is rarely labeled as a perpetrator in rape. This speaks more to the society's definition of rape than the woman's role as the person responsible for the sexual assault (Finkelhor, 2006). In a recent study of females convicted of sexual abuse, over 50% of them stated they derived sadistic pleasure from inflicting pain on their victims. Nonetheless, in this society women are consistently seen as victims of abuse not perpetrators. The findings of the study fully coincide with my personal experience for being left alone and thrown out of bed by my own mother.

There are myriad psychosocial and behavioral consequences as well. If a child is neglected in early stages of development, the lack of attachment between the child and his or her caregiver may affect the child's expectations of adult availability, trust, and social relationships throughout the life course.
