World War I was a global war that originated in the European continent in the July of 1914 (Prentiss, 1937). The war involved the major powers of the world all of whom formed opposing alliances. World War I involved the use of chemical weapons, which were mainly meant to demoralize the opposition apart from the obvious intent of killing and injuring hostile forces. Chemical warfare was also highly effective in terms of neutralizing entrenched enemy forces, particularly because the slow-moving and toxic gas clouds were able to travel fast and reach easily (Paxman, 1982).
