Chapter 1: Introduction

Introduction

Charity, in its manifestations and by its nature is extremely multifaceted. Different peoples, cultures and political regimes gave rise to the diversity of its species. However, the contributions and participation of sportsmen community towards this trend is very notable. It is also praiseworthy to acknowledge their contributions towards making a difference in society. Sports charity exists since the time sports began in the world, as an official medium to hold competitions among players with different sporting and athletic abilities (Steele & Elder, 2000). The sports men utilized their fame and recognition to gather mass support for different community groups, and even contributed in an individual manner.

Research Aim

Following are the aims of this research:

To find out why sports men raise funds and contribute towards charity?

To identify the factors that stimulates them to do this?

To assess the contributions of these sportsmen's charity towards the society

Research Question

This research is guided by the following question:

What motivates sports personnel to raise charity funds for the needy?

Conclusion of Section

It is necessary to discuss several motivations that compel or inspire sports persons to contribute towards charity in the name of the Lord. It is also necessary to see if they do this for no expectation of return, or whether their actions derive some form of a reward that is intangible or far-reaching for their careers.

Chapter 2: Literature Review

Introduction

Popularity sells in profound ways. The support of a celebrity or sports man, in particular, to a campaign, can make a real difference in terms of media coverage, public awareness and pressure to the relevant organizations (Ruskin & Achilles, 1995). Sports persons give an example that people can follow and usually add unique value to the organization.

The benefits of endorsements by athletes and sports persons are:

Attracting new audiences;

Raise funds by encouraging sponsorship and contributions;

Mobilize participation and public opinion;

Improve the public's image of the organization;

Reinvigorate long-term campaign (Ostrander, 1997).

This literature review will discuss the core of the research from data and information that is previously available on the topic, in addition to analyzing it from a critical perspective. The section will shed light on different aspects behind motivating the sports person to indulge in charitable affairs while maintain their routines. It will also discuss how does the contribution of the sports persons contribute towards the betterment of the society, and how does their fame and fortune help in gaining charity for the needy people of a nation.
