Summary of Chapter 12

The chapter is pointing out the issues emerged in the study that had brought changes in the Arab society. The issues like disruption in the socialist system, the separating of old world order, and the devastating Gulf War have made the deep rooted impacts on the Arab Society. The book has mentioned the failures of Arabs to accomplish their aim of getting a new start with leaving the old system behind. There also remain hurdles like Gulf war and even their own beliefs of competing against with their old predicaments. According to them, these exact obstacles had hindered their aim of achieving the society without any Western influence.

The scholars of Arab have required illuminating their old predicaments with a focus on issues like; rising inequalities among the different classes and sects, their dependency on Western infiltration, their loss of religious faith, their preference of traditionalism over creativity and modernity etc. The consequences of Gulf War saw a National conference among the scholars of Arab, who brought upon the point of the nonexistence of a democratic system and the infringement of human rights. This was the reason why they condemned the actions of the Arab rulers for the flaws in their political system, and the exclusion of citizens of Arab from the entire political process. This emphasizes the point of violating the human rights that the authority was held responsible for, by not allowing them to carry out their affairs and those of the society (Brynen, R., et al., 1995).
