Causes of World War 2

Introduction

The world war two was one of the most devastating wars fought globally which lasted for about six years since its start in 1939. World war two was fought between the two military alliances namely the Allies and the Axis. The inclusion of vast majority of nations of the world and the major world worlds led to the formation of these two alliances. It all started in September 1939 when Germany attacked Poland with the purpose of invading the nation of Poland. The Japanese empire was already at war with the Chinese in 1937 but history records that world war two was officially initiated by the Germans in the year 1939 (Immell, 2001).

Germany set out with the aim to establish a big empire by conquering almost every state in Europe. The allies which consisted of super power like United States, Soviet Union, China, The British Empire and other nations such as France, Poland and etc were the only forces opposing the Axis and fought against them. World War 2 was clearly a result of the tensions, political unrest and resentments created by World War I and the after effects of the Great Depression which took place in the 1930s. World War II clearly outperformed world war one, both by duration, intensity of the fighting and by the loss of life and resources used. Seventy two States participated and 110 million people were mobilized with more than 40 million people dead. The nations which suffered the most included Northern China, Japan and Europe. In addition, the World War had a truly global outreach as it was fought in almost every continent (Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania) (Adams, 2000).

Germany, the big loser, harbored deep resentment over the loss of large geographic areas and for compensation to be paid in terms of the war reparations imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. Italy, one of the winners, did not receive sufficient territorial concessions to offset the cost of the war nor to realize their ambitions. Japan, who was also on the victorious Allied side, thwarted its desire for more possessions in East Asia. France, Britain and the United States had, in turn, the objectives of the conflict that began in ...
