CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Background of the Research
Architectural traditions shift from century to century and decade to decade. Rome, Italy is home to over 900 churches drawing thousands of visitors every year. The pilgrimages to Rome, both divinely and/or artistically inspired often include stops at The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, The Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura, or The Basilica of St. John Lateran, but a tour is not complete without a visit to The Sistine Chapel an important religious relic and the current site of the Papal conclave. (Meier, 2004)
If The Sistine Chapel served as an important structure in the Renaissance, than The Jubilee Church is Rome's contemporary model. This research will utilize historical background including Church leadership and state of the Catholic Church, commentary on contemporary societies of the eras, and interior design knowledge to aid in a formal analysis of the exterior and interior architectures of the Catholic Church in Rome during the Renaissance and today. (Cassirer, 1942)
Aims and Objectives
To analyze the significant changes occurred in the Catholic Church both during the Renaissance and in the 21st Century.
Hypothesis
There is a significant difference between the traditional Catholic Church during the Renaissance and those of today.

Humanists believed in the significance of people, that they were actually worthy of being alive for their own sake - a philosophy that was totally at odds with the Church at that time. (Ferguson, 1986)
Personalities now became known and celebrated for their artistic achievements, and associated their names with their work. This is in stark contrast to medieval times where artists rarely put their names to their work, being done solely for the glory ...
