Joe, currently in 12th grade, is unsure about his career goals related to his graduation. He is an honor roll student and has high grades in math, history, and art. Joe reports that he is under enormous pressure and feels stressed because eventually his parents want him to attend law school, to follow the family traditions as both his parents are lawyers. On the other hand, Joe is interested is studying art and enjoys his art and photography classes.
A careful analysis of career development theories reveals that problems of a child usually start in the beginning of his school life, when he started to take interest in artwork, and not following his parent's choice to opt for a career in law. The theory, which has been revealed, is the Vocational Personalities and Environments by John Holland, which has, covered the personality and environmental factor of a child from the beginning.
In this case, the rational decision making model should be used by Joe's family that would involve a proper planning and analysis that what step should be taken in a coherent order from the one that happened earlier in the childhood life. Joe's family should think and take into consideration all the alternatives before taking any decision, because there is always more than one way to do things in a right way.
There are several factors, which form the, principles of counseling, these principles include faith and hope, focus on future, action orientated approach, helping others, goal setting, developing relationship between the child and his parents. Better relationship with his parents will be necessary for a better future of Joe. He certainly needs some career counseling by the right people and needs a proper direction to understand the clear path for his career. He needs to understand that he must analyze all the pros and cons of this career, if he really feels to develop his career in arts. On the other hand, the career, which his parents, are suggesting to him must be analyzed by him properly and should take advice from his friends and relatives. (Dahl, 1982)
It is advisable to mention all his attributes and circumstances that he is bearing like the career planning problem as he is confused in it. Joe is interested in art and nature related studies, he is more inclined towards the beauty of life rather that scanning through the law material. However, the problem with him is that his both his parents are a lawyer and want him to follow their footsteps by enrolling in the law school. They want him to join their law firm as an attorney.
