Introduction

Carter Holt Harvey (CHH), is a leading company in New Zealand comprising of over 11000 people in 33 separate businesses across the Southern Hemisphere. It was found in 1899. Since, then it has create a huge impact by its HR function on people and performance improvement programmes over the last 3 years. At present, CHH has also been able to focus on talent management directions/interventions provided by the outsourced former department, in addition to the development of a range of on-line tools.

Case Study Details

In the month of April, the 5th annual Roger Award were held. During these awards, the prize was given to the worst operating company in New Zealand. These awards were organized by the Campaign against Foreign Control of Aotearoa (CAFCA) and GATT Watchdog.

Although this event was held on the basis of small budget, but it was a source of attraction for the organizers in other countries who confronting the power and control (Ahluwalia, 1974).

This was the most effective way of raising awareness about the emerging problems in the world. These transnational companies have a huge impact on the environment and local communities (Adelman, 1973). The award was given to the transnational company which produced the negative impact on issues related to monopoly, unemployment, imperialism, impact on Maori indigenous peoples, running an ideological crusade and the political interference which existed at that time. Similarly, the labor rights were also highlighted the issues they were facing such as abuse of workers, health and occupation, public safety. Women were also highlighted in this event as they play a prominent role in the country.

From all the companies, the winner for this year was CHH. This company was originally part of New Zealand's own transactional company, but after that, it was acquired by American Titan Wood International paper which now holds 50% of the shares. CHH also operates in Fiji Islands and Australia, which is one of the largest wood and paper producers in the southern hemisphere. As mentioned here the business, employment and political context of CHH and the talent issues faced - especially in sourcing good people from very scarce markets or competing against a 'brain drain' in the southern hemisphere. As a parent company, this company has been able to manage its standard by creating more awareness regarding the environment and taking part to get rid of the environmental hazards, which are increasing at higher rates. (Ahluwalia, 1974) This company also owns a large proportion of land approximately 330,000 hectors, with a predominant production of radiata pine in New Zealand.

This award was most deserved by the company because it has a good reputation in the world.
