Dominican carnival and Bacchanalia festivals were two Carnivals. They were ubiquitous festivals throughout the medieval and early modern Europe, full of rich symbolic imagery and destructive potential. Carnival 'proper' (the most enthusiastically celebrated in the warm climate of southern Europe) was the season of surplus before and in contrast to fasting and abstinence of Lent.
