In this study we try to explore the concept of business processes in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on analysis of the business processes as well as on their design and its relation with the business performance. The research also analyzes many aspects of process automation and tries to gauge its effect on the performance on the business processes. Finally the research describes various factors which are responsible for good performance of a business through process automation and how existing processes can be improved through re-designing of the processes.

CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
A business process is a set of reasonably linked commercial activity that combines to convey something of worth (for example information, services, products or goods) to a client. Whereas; a business process design is the technique by which a firm defines and realizes the organizational activities that allow it to perform certain functions (Obermeyer & Pinto, 1994). Designing a business process is related with planning a business' processes to assure that they meet customer requirements and are effective, optimized and support and sustain the growth and development of organization. A well-planned process will deliver greater productivity and enhance efficiency. (Huxhold, & Levinsohn, 1995) The common plans mostly behind business process design projects are:
New business opportunities
Business process integration and automation
Operational performance improvement
Cost reduction
Customer and supply chain management
Business process design generally takes place as a former, vital period in these plans, rather than as an end in itself. (Sexton, and Van Auken 1985, pp. 7-15)The goal of the overall project is to implement business change, whether that change is primarily organizational (improve the business' operating processes), technical (implement or integrate software systems), or a combination of the two. In a process improvement project, the focus of the business process design phase is to streamline the process: to understand and measure the requirements, and to eliminate the risk of losing value through inefficient or inappropriate activities. In a technology implementation project, the focus is on understanding the processes that are being automated, and ensuring that the appropriate technology is selected, configured and implemented to support them. (Schaper, & Volery, 2004)
In this study analysis of business process and its designs would be performed as to mention the importance of the issue. The study would highlight the importance of business process integration and automation. This is one of the ...
