The business environment in today's world is now defined by the technology it uses, namely computer systems that have literally flattened the world and connected it the way like never before. Technology is found to be integrated in every aspect of the business culture. Looking at current day business, one would see computer systems utilised in everything from connecting individual departments, tracking sales trends, organising customer databases, advertising, and communication. These advancements in computer and technology usage have created a revolution within the world of business, transforming the business environment into a digital arena.
As the use of computer technology has increased and become an indispensable tool to the business environment, the number of cyber related threats have increased as well. These threats are of a malicious intent and have caused many issues within the business cyber environment. Some of these threats cause corruption of operating systems, loss of data, theft of intellectual property, and stolen customer database information. These threats are very real and they could cause loss of data, profit and productivity. Organisations should gain knowledge of these cyber threats and then be proactive in preventing these threats from becoming a reality within their firm. This paper is an examination of the current threats combined with the steps a business should take to keep their network safe in cyber environment of the 21st century.
Organisations must increasingly utilise the Internet in order to compete effectively in the market environment of 21st century. The Internet provides both dangers and benefits for organisations. The increase of cyber attacks upon databases, information systems and business financial information, will continue to multiply in the future with potentially devastating impacts. Most organisations utilising the internet have only minimal knowledge of the potential damages that may be inflicted upon them by cyber attacks and are, therefore, not proactive in gaining current knowledge of hacking and virus threats. This study will show the threats organisations are facing in the 21st century, and also ways through which these threats can be minimised. This will allow organisations to be more effective within the current market environment.
