Stress is a part of life. It is at times necessary inside and outside work. Some people have the tendency to perform better when they are working under stress. Burnout is a feature that is faced by an employee on account of exhaustion, de motivation, or being in a state of mental and emotional exhaustion. It is caused by prolonged periods of stress. Burnout is typically found in business organizations. Teachers, lawyers, police officials and nurses usually face the highest levels of burnouts. The reasons why burnout is highly prevalent in the professional organizations are due to the high stress environmental factors, emotional involvedness and lack of adequate staff. People most prone to burnout are the ones who are most sincere and dedicated to their work. Burnout usually comes with work experience, overload and other out of office interactions such as those involving home and friends. It usually results in an alienating attitude and thoughts of quitting the job.

Some other effects of burnout are that it affects social relationships and other attitudes of the person when interacting with friends or at home. It also causes health problems such as sleeplessness, headaches and colds. Some people take to drinking alcohol, smoking and medicines to relieve the problems associated with burnouts. This leads to complications of health problems (Lloyd et.al, 2002).

Burnout and stress not only afflicts the individual but the organization in which they work. Organizations usually incur losses as a result of their employees falling prey to burnout. Burnout and stress usually results in the individual quitting the job. This means that the organization would have to rehire an individual and train him or her to perform the task.
