What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is the cancer that is generated in the mammary glands of the females. It is the result of the occurrence of an uncontrolled group of breast cells which ultimately converge at a point in the form of tumor. There are two broad kinds of breast cancer, Ductal carcinoma cancer starts from the ducts that transport milk from the mammary glands to the nipple. Most types of breast cancers represents this type of cancer. Lobular carcinoma cancer starts in the fractions of the breast that generate milk. These parts are called lobules.

How much time elapses from the appearance of the first cancer cell until it forms a cell population that turns into cancer, this is not known as yet, but in general, it is estimated that it may take 2 to 3 years until one get the phenomenon of metastasizing in breast. It is estimated that 10-16% of patients diagnosed with breast cancer will develop brain metastases. Although the brain is not the most prevalent site of breast cancer metastasis (it is fourth, below the lungs, liver, and the bones), it is extremely devastating due to the difficulty of treating brain metastases (Galileo, 2010).

Breast cancer said to be on second place for the causes of death among females. However, statistics show that the death rate for this type of cancer is declining partly because of screening programs in place. It appears that women, who benefited during the observation period of good social support, saw their risk of mortality to be 38% lower compared to those with little social support. It's the same with the risk of recurrence of breast cancer: women with good social supports received 48% less likely to suffer a recurrence (Wagle, 1997).
