BRAIN-COMPATIBLE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

Brain-Compatible Learning Environments

Abstract

In this study we try to explore the concept of “Brain-compatible learning” in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on “Brain-compatible learning” and its relation with “Schools and Teaching Environment”. The research also analyzes many aspects of “Brain-compatible learning” and tries to gauge its overall effect. Finally the research describes various factors which are responsible for “Brain-compatible learning” and tries to describe the overall effect of “Brain-compatible learning”.

Brain-Compatible Learning Environments

Introduction

In this paper we will explore the advantages of brain compatible learning environment. Starting with the introduction of Brain-based learning, we will see how schools can incorporate brain based learning into their schools and in the end we will also focus on the advantages of Brain-based learning.

The mind is a storehouse of facts. On the basis of this popular belief, teaching becomes the process of filling the storehouse with facts and learning is the process of acquiring or absorbing facts. Education is a continuous and dynamic process. Due to the feature of dynamism, the aims of education have changed from gain of knowledge to application of knowledge. We are no more satisfied with the system of education which presents facts only but we need an education system which not only provides facts but should be capable of being translated in real-life situations. Today, students need to understand the current state of their knowledge and build on it, improve it, and make decisions in the face of uncertainty. With these changing expectations, education, its aims, curriculum, teaching methodology and its administration need an overhaul reconstruction (Beyin, 2008).

This means that if you want to maximize learning, you'll first want to discover how “nature's engine” runs. This singular realization alone has fueled a massive and urgent movement worldwide to redesign learning. What we thought was critical in the past may, in fact, not be very important at all. Perhaps, our instructional methods of the past really emerged because they were measurable. Think about this though: You can have the most efficient net in the world, and if you're fishing in the wrong place, you're still not going to go home with a big catch.

Brain-Based Learning

Brain-Based Learning is learning in accordance with the way the brain is naturally designed to learn. It is a multidisciplinary approach that is built on the fundamental question, “What is good for the brain?” It crosses and draws from multiple disciplines, such as chemistry, neurology, psychology, sociology, genetics, biology, and computational neurobiology. It is a way of thinking about learning. It is a way of thinking about your job. It is not a discipline on its own: neither is it a prescribed format nor dogma. In fact, a “formula” for it would be in direct opposition to the principles of brain-based learning. Although a brain-based approach doesn't provide a recipe for you to follow, it does encourage you to consider the nature of the brain in your ...
