In 1919 America was still retrieving from the Great World War. Price inflation and the cost of dwelling had expanded far after wages. Men back from the conflict inundated the work market which farther weakened workers' making power.
During this year, one fifth of the country's employees would strike. The year begun with New York's harbor employees striking in January, pursued by dressmakers. In February report headlines described a "prelude to revolution" when a general strike in Seattle shut all enterprise February 6 to 11th.
Bombs were mailed to the head of Seattle who smashed the strike, and in April, forty more posted letters blasting apparatus were discovered en path to other public managers for May Day. With the backdrop of evidently dispersing communism, numerous patriotic Americans accepted they were on the verge of a employees revolution. (www.twincities.com, 2010)
In Massachusetts, textile employees in Lawrence strolled out in dispute of six day, nine hour work schedules. Boston phone operators cut off much of New England's telephone service in an April, and in July Boston's increased train employees went off the job in their own protest. Boston's political and enterprise managers could glimpse this nationwide tendency of strikes handicapping their own enterprises and groups, and they were alarmed.
The Main People behind the Strike
There is no question that Boston's police had grievances, which they conveyed as early as 1917. New agent yield had not increased in sixty years, since 1857 when new new employees obtained two dollars daily. Officers worked seven days per week, with a day off every other week throughout which they couldn't depart village without exceptional permission. Depending on obligation, agents worked between 73 and 98 hours every week, and were needed to doze in infested position dwellings kept in deplorable condition. (Koestler 2010)
Since 1885, the Boston police were under the order of a commissioner nominated by the state governor. Though Boston's head controlled their allowance, their procedure and how they utilized the allowance was controlled by a commissioner nominated by the governor. This put the head, Andrew Peters in a tough position. His town was defended by a force not in his control.
