History of Body Farms

The first body farm was established in 1981 by a forensic anthropologist at Knoxville, Tennessee. There was a reason to establish body farm because there was no farm which had studied the decomposition of bodies previously. At that time, there were volunteers, which donate bodies to study the decomposition, in order to advance the field of forensic, criminal investigation. In this regard, University of Tennessee got 100 bodies per year donated by the volunteers. It has also gotten the collection of 650 bodies for criminal investigation. This facility of criminal investigation through decomposed bodies was about 2.5 acre, but now many facilities presented in Texas, North California and Pennsylvania. There were lectures carried out by Dr. William M. Bass who is the expert of the field. He was the one who created this body farm behind the University of Tennessee Medical Centre on the wooded hillside. Bass started its research in a different way to study the decomposition of bodies and insect activities, but this was not possible without evolving the teaching environment. The body farm is the facility of University of Tennessee Medical centre but it is called as body farm when the writer Patricia Cornwell wrote a novel in the name of body farms in the year 1994. The writer like Patricia Cornwell put different research topics on body farms in their novels. The origin of the body farm was not an easy task as Dr. William M. Bass asked his dean to provide him the piece of land where he could store bodies. At the start of the body farm, Dr. Bass just got one body and a small piece of land.

Functionality of Body Farms

It is the biggest facility designed for scientists, to study the decomposition of dead bodies. It helps the experts and scientists to get information of rotten bodies, which is naturally decomposed. They also study that how different processes are taken place during the decomposition. There are researches made by investigators, to preserve the proofs in any criminal investigation. It is mandatory to document all the evidences. The processes should be properly recorded in order to prevent the questions asked against the legal issues.
