The central character of the movie is played by Natalie Portman as Nina, who is a veteran ballerina, living with her mother. Even though she is young and living with her mother, she is also growing old and she realizes that soon she will be considered inappropriate due to age to become a prima ballerina. It is also suggested in the movie that Nina is a virgin. Nina works for a dance company in New York as a member, which is operated by Thomas, played by Vincent Cassel.
