The Bill of Rights is a critical part of the Constitution. When the formatters of the Constitution were creating the document, some believe that the Bill of Rights was not necessary. However after long debate, they agreed that it should be included. The purpose however is to guarantee certain rights not provide them; for example the freedom of speech under the First Amendment. There are limitations and people need to realize that the Constitution does not guarantee free speech. “The Freedom of Speech or known as the First Amendment is one of the most valuable and precious rights guaranteed to Americans in the United States Constitution.

At the same time, it is one of the most abused rights by Americans” this is one of the protections that many Americans hold very dear and also value it because it will allow them to speak out against government policies that they do not like and also allow them to express there religious beliefs of their choosing. In other ways some people have been know to abuse this right due to they use it negatively and will slander people or will use ugly or offensive language about people that are different. Some people believe that it protects absolutely any speech, anytime (Monk, 2000).

Vested by the first Amendment of the Bill of Rights, all citizens have the right to freedom of religion, press, speech, assembly and petition. Freedom of religion is granted unless religious activities are a danger to our community. This makes sense to me because if their religion is causing them to harm someone or their religion has them harm themselves then it should be stopped by authorities immediately. I think freedom of Speech does the same since it is in the same Amendment (Monk, 2000). Continuing with the first Amendment, it also gives you your right to the freedom of Assembly which basically means you can be anywhere (well almost anywhere) and assemble your peers in a meeting type of event.

Though some might see this Amendment as it needs to be edited because in many cases gangs or mobs abuse this Amendment and use it to meet up and discuss or do many un-moral things such as killings, the illegal sale of drugs etc. Law enforcement has had some run-ins with these types of events where they will even say that they are exercising their freedom of assembly. And last but not least the first amendment also gives you the right to petition meaning that if you want something or someone to change that is a person of power and you are of lower rank you can petition with more people for a change. Now if the petition gets enough support you can have your change. Hopefully citizens don't abuse this part of the first Amendment since it seems they abuse the other parts of it (Burger, 2001).
