Chapter 1: Introduction
Background of the Study
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), also called Pervasive Developmental Disorders, represent, contrary to what used to think, a common problem that affects 0.6% of children. The basic feature is that there are major difficulties in establishing normal social relationships with children of the same age. They also tend to have problems with language, both reading comprehension skills - speech, as in the social use. The third characteristic of children with ASD is mental rigidity, objectified by a lack of imaginative play, by restricted interests and patterns of resistance to change.
The diagnosis is based on the nuclear problem identification and psychological testing. In general, it is also necessary to perform blood tests, and in specific cases, nuclear magnetic resonance studies and EEG. (Cole 2005 287)
In ASD, the approach is quite complex. These are children that are placed on a spectrum that can range from a relatively mild, allowing the child's own understanding of his personality, to severe problems that block social interaction. Within the concept of ASD include Asperger syndrome, characterized by a high level of intelligence and language, but with strong difficulties in social relationships. (Cohen 2007 85)
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are considered as a group of developmental disorders affecting social interaction a child, his / her communication skills and behaviors and interests. Symptoms of ASD include mild to severe disabilities. Depending on its severity, five syndromes were identified in total, which includes pervasive developmental disorder, autism but pervasive developmental disorder is not otherwise specified and Asperger syndrome. Furthermore, Rett disorder and childhood disintegrative disorder are included in the rare conditions.
ASD affects more or less one in every 175 kids. Investigators do not know for sure what the actual disorders' cause. Apparently, due to genetic or hereditary factors, but can also result from prenatal problems or other non-genetic factors. Being a parent of a child that he / she suffer from an ASD can be difficult. While there is no cure for these disorders, early identification and intensive intervention when the child is young to be achieved further improvements. (Burton 2009 85)
