Abstract

The Atkins Diet is a high fat, high protein, low carbohydrate, weight loss diet that was developed by Dr. Robert Atkins in the year 1960s. This particular research is based on secondary data collection. The data is extracted from various journals, articles and books from Ebsco database. Our study suggests that this diet has been very effective in very overweight people This is a type of dissociated diet, which can be very effective when done while a patient is treated by diet, stagnant (plateau situation) and do not lose weight, then you can always use it under strict medical supervision and for short periods of time. A balanced diet should contain carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fiber and water in correct proportions. All these nutrients are essential to maintaining a healthy body.

INTRODUCTION

The Atkins Diet is a high fat, high protein, low carbohydrate, weight loss diet that was developed by Dr. Robert Atkins in the year 1960s. In the year 1989, Atkins founded a company and named it Atkins Nutritionals, which produced food products and other commodities that helped people to follow the Atkins Diet. The Atkins Diet has waned and waxed in quality over the years and has engendered a number of emulators. Although seriously criticized by many dieticians since its origination, most of the clinical studies showed that the Atkins diet does have at least short-term efficaciousness in encouraging weight loss and improving the health without endangering the health of the healthy individuals. Although Atkins diet encourages exercise but it is not a requirement that has to be followed for the diet (Fleming, 2005).

Stages in Atkins Diet

Atkins diet comprises of two stages which are as follows:

First Stage

It extends for 14 days, is the most challenging and which achieves greater weight loss. Carbohydrate intake is limited to no more than 20 grams a day and the base of the food is protein (red and white meat, eggs).

Second Stage

It continues as the first, but gradually begin to increase (5 grams per day) carbohydrates up to 60 grams daily. If the patient becomes stagnant and do not lose weight becomes lower carbohydrate intake. When you have achieved the desired weight is recommended to continue consuming between 60 and 120 grams of carbohydrates a day to stay (Fuhrman, 2007).

Advantages

It helps people to reduce their weight rapidly

There is no major difference in weight loss in the long-run as compared to the other diets
