Abstract

Media has covered the war on terror with more than ever focus and detail. It has shown live coverage to after maths of the war zones. War on Terror has multiple repercussions and multiple targets. Terrorists have evolved over time and so have their modes of operations. To study the role of media in war on terror it is very necessary to understand the channels of media the terrorists use for their objective. From conventional local communication channels they have gone to most sophisticated and fastest channels of communication the internet. For any terrorist attack, there are two victims, direct and indirect. The direct victims being on the spot and indirect victims being the one exposed to the information of that terrorist activity. It is not fair to say that; media is behind all this menace. They are trying to balance their social responsibility and commercial stakes. The government should devise polices and media should seek to audit itself. However, the government should make intermediate checks as to the direction and implementation of these polices. It is obvious that media should have freedom of expression, but its usage by terrorists to manoeuvre the situation in their favour and creating terror needs to be stopped, otherwise the war on terror will lose its essence.

Introduction

The role of media cannot be ignored in personal and collective lives. It puts a great effect on the perception and awareness of issues. Media has played a very important role in the War on Terror. War on Terror has multiple repercussions and multiple targets. Terrorists have evolved over time and so have their modes of operations. From conventional local communication channels they have gone to most sophisticated and fastest channels of communication like the internet. To study the role of media in war on terror it is very necessary to understand the channels of media the terrorists use for their objectives. This paper discusses the role of media in war of terror form the perspective of relation that media and terrorists have and how it has been used by the terrorists in their own favour and how media has highlighted the war.
