Introduction

It has been suggested by the surveys of cheating amongst student that dishonesty in academic research is both growing and prevalent (Stern & Havlicek, 1986, Pp. 129-142; Singhal, 1982, Pp. 775-780; McCabe & Trevino, 1993, Pp. 522-538; Haines, Diekhoff, LaBeff, & Clark, 1986, Pp. 342-354; McCabe & Trevino, 1997, Pp. 379-396). A number of colleges, in response, have been assessing their academic integrity policies looking for of decreasing academic dishonesty within the institutions. A plan of action, which has gained improved consideration, is the implementation of codes of academic honor. In the previous decade, Harvard Business School, George Washington University, and Duke University have implemented the codes of honor, and the University of Georgetown has implemented a system of honor, which integrates a number of the conventional honor code features. Steps have been taken by numerous institutions for reinvigorating their policies of honor code that are long-standing and some other are presently assessing the probability of honor codes implementation for the first time in the institution's history. Contemporary studies (such as McCabe, Trevino, & Butterfield, 1999, Pp. 211-234; McCabe & Trevino, 1993, Pp. 522-538) reveal that honor codes that are properly implemented could be effectual in maintaining the academic integrity and honesty standards and decreasing cheating. This paper describes the importance of academic integrity and the consequences of unfair means in academic writing. In addition to this, the paper specifically explains the concepts of 'intellectual ownership', 'academic integrity' and 'unfair means', and appraises the consequences of unfair means.

Discussion

Extensively accessible worldwide information has brought both the problems and benefits with it. In the last five or six years, the matter of appropriately admitting sources (that is within the academic integrity concept an important aspect) within the academic context has gained considerable attention. A review of publication by a number of authors was carried out by Joyce (2007, Pp. 187-200), regarding the AI (Academic Integrity) and found more than a hundred works, which have, since 1998, been presented in conferences of educational integrity and have appeared in various journals.

Within the research by Charless, et.al (2006, Pp. 3-9) the authors explained that the substantiations obtainable within the literature offer a broad array of reasons behind plagiarism on part of the students. Few reasons included: poor referencing and academic writing skills, and insufficient study skills.

With the passage of time there have been several findings, which report academic dishonesty and cheating within institutions. Academic dishonesty, in the article 'Cheating to Win' is defined as offering an undeserved benefit for one student over another (Mullins, 2000, Pp. 23). A plethora of findings and research has been produces by Donald L. McCabe and associates, much of which sustain the honor codes existence within universities and colleges.
