The very crude software and equipment available naturally limited past computer-based survey systems. The simple scope of these systems was therefore to only gather outline property element condition and cost information. These basic data were then used to produce simple databases and printed schedules of work items. Some hand-held computers were also used to gather basic data about individual building assets, often using barcode readers to quickly enter a unique asset reference.
