Pierre Alechinsky

The Belgian painter and lithographer Alechinsky was born October 19, 1927 in Brussels, Alechinsky studied from 1944 to 1948 book illustration and typography at the Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Architecture and Decorative Arts La Cambre in Brussels.

Alechinsky began painting in 1947 and became a member of the Young Belgian Painting, especially with Louis Van Lint, Jan Cox and Mark Mendelson. The same year he had his first exhibition of paintings in the gallery Lou Cosyn Brussels.

Alechinsky involved since 1949 in the group COBRA (for Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam) including Karel Appel and Christian Dotremont Asger Jorn. He participated in the first major exhibition of motion Stedjelijk Museum in Amsterdam and is actively involved in the production of the magazine.

In 1951, the year of the end of the movement Cobra Alechinsky moved to Paris. He experimented with new techniques of printmaking at Atelier 17 directed by Stanley William Hater in 1952. He became friends with Giacometti, Bram van Veldt, and Victor Bruner and corresponds with the calligrapher Morita Sheryl Kyoto(Abbe, 2009).

In 1954, Alechinsky met the Chinese painter Ting Wallace, who will play a large role in the development of his work. The year is held the first exhibition of the artist in Paris, Nina Dausset Gallery. In Kyoto in 1955, Alechinsky a film documentary called Japanese Calligraphy. His first major exhibition held at the Pala is des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. In 1958, he joined the Steering Committee of the Salon de Mai and stayed there until 1970. He exhibited in the gallery space of Amsterdam. There will exhibit nine times until 1998. In 1959, Alechinsky invited by Asger Jorn and Paolo Marinette participates in Vitality NELL'ARTE at Palazzo Grassy in Venice.

In 1960 began the series of drawings on the peels of oranges. The artist began to collect old papers. In 1961, Alechinsky made his first trip to the United States to attend the Pittsburgh International Show. It exposes inks and paints at the Stedjelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Rotterdam Unstring. In 1962 he began exhibiting regularly at the Lefebvre Gallery in New York and the Galleries de France in Paris. He creates "designs-word" with Christian Dotremont.

In 1963, Pierre Alechinsky installs a new workshop at Bougival. In 1964, he invited Alberto Citronella to work in his studio in Paris. It is also the time of the first lithographic works with Peter Barmen.

In 1965, he began painting with acrylic Wallace Ting in New York. At Central Park, he made his first acrylic painting "marginal notes". He learned to rub the paper itself. Alechinsky made his first trip to Mexico and sets of inks and paints at the Arts Club of Chicago. He met Refine Tamayo. In 1966, André Breton chose "Central Park" for the eleventh and final exhibition of international Surrealism.
