Artifact

The term artifact means a distortion of the result of a radiological examination by certain technical processes used. This word is especially used in medical imaging, to report, indicate certain types of image degradation. It usually has direct relation to the type of technique used. The specialist in medical imaging (radiology) must recognize the artifact in order not to misinterpret an image capable of translating a real injury (MacWilliams, 2003).

One of the most famous artifacts in medical imaging is the so-called shake resulting loss of edge definition and contrast. This type of artifact may appear on some radiographs or CT images, or even nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).Regarding the technique computed tomography (CT) one of the most common artifacts is that produced by the proximity of bone giving a false radiological image. More rarely the artifact is so intense that it requires the radiologist to reapply a new plate to eliminate the false image. In the worst case is the medical imaging technique used is called into question. Distortion of the result of a review is due to the technical process used or the conditions of implementation of the review. The term artifact is particularly used in medical imaging. The artifact must be known not to be misinterpreted by doctors as an image lesion.

The artifact is the best known in photography as that of shake which induces a loss of edge definition and contrast. It can be seen on radiographs, CT images or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Some artifacts are predictable and inevitable, others, such as those caused by movements may be related to patient cooperation. At worst, the artifacts can make the review inappropriate or uninterpretable and lead the physician to provide another exam technique.

Conventional Radiology

Many factors contribute to image quality, suitable for an exhibition with good contrast. Include the patient's body size, the technical parameters of exposure, the quality of films and their treatment. The digital radiology offers new possibilities for controlling the contrast. It is a traditional or conventional radiology, i.e. the simple X-ray everybody knows, many factors are likely to be a source of artifacts. If we take care to make a good show that is to say a proper exposure and good contrast, and alternatively if you use a film of good quality and on the other hand we take is to consider the panniculus adipose (fat layer) of the patient and exposure technique. Finally, if using digital radiology, providing new opportunities for contrast control, under these conditions, the artifacts are rare (Filler, 2010).
