The effects of poor health on poverty are by no means unique to mental illness; their negative impacts are greater than for most acute and chronic illnesses. These adverse impacts increase the risk of impoverishment for households that fall below the poverty line, and for those already below the poverty line they potentially could lead to starvation. They can also frequently lead to physical illnesses, which present to under-resourced primary care services.
