Forgiveness is a notion that has been round for thousands of years and has deep spiritual roots. The scriptures of all the large beliefs have comprehensive teachings on forgiveness. In the Bible the word “forgive” is literally translated, “to cancel a debt.” (Reed & Enright 2006) The Bible also teaches that forgiveness of sin is freely offered by God based on God's unconditional love of humanity. Forgiveness, even of one's enemies, is a primary tenet of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Current study indicates that forgiveness aids in the healing process. Practicing forgiveness helps us heal broken connections, deal with the pain of grief and decrease, and aids in recovery from chemical dependency. Women who have been emotionally abused experienced greater improvement with PTSD, (Reed & Enright 2006) depression, and anxiety through forgiveness therapy than those treated with alternative therapies. Forgiveness therapy has also been discovered productive in considering with anger, despondency, disquiet and reduced self-esteem in those retrieving from chemical dependency. Forgiveness can aid in fixing broken marital relationships.
