Anti-Federalists versus Federalists



Abstract

In this study we try to explore the different views of Federalists and Anti-Federalists in a holistic context. The data is gathered through secondary sources. Supporters of the Constitution became known as Federalists and quickly gained acclaim across the nation. Opponents of the plan for a stronger government took the name of Anti-Federalists. Different views of between them raised hot debates during the ratification of constitution which finally resulted in the formation of constitution. There are five main arguments of the Federalists to centralize power. First, they advocate patriotism. According to Federalists, the people of America share the same culture, same language, and same religion. So rather than separate, we must unite. As for the Anti-Federalists, they argue that four critics address the Federalists. The first is the lack of Bill of Rights, that is to say a charter of fundamental rights of citizens.

Introduction

A majority of delegates to the Constitutional Assembly approved the documents which had been working since May on September 17, 1787. After the farewell banquet, the delegates went home quickly to organize support, most in favor, but some against the proposed statute. Before the Constitution became the law of the land, it had to go through scrutiny and public debate. The document was submitted to the United States Congress on September 20. For two days, from 26 to 27 September, Congress debated whether to censure the delegates to the Constitutional Assembly had overstepped its authority by creating a new form of government rather than simply revising the Articles of Confederation. They finally decided to drop the matter. Instead, on September 28, Congress ordered the state legislatures to convene meetings to ratify the Constitution in every state. Article VII stipulated that nine states had to ratify the constitution before it is put into effect.

Federalists and Anti-Federalists Disputes

Supporters of the Constitution became known as Federalists and quickly gained acclaim across the nation. Among the best known federalists include: Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay .These are the main contributors of The Federalist and they wrote a series of 85 essays published in newspapers in New York, which served in various ways such as founding documents for republic. Opponents of the plan for a stronger government took the name of Anti-Federalists. They feared that a government with the power to tax would soon become despotic and corrupt as it had been the Great Britain a few decades earlier.

Views of Federalists

This also reduces the blinds on the natural resources unequally shared between states, or even reduces the risk of civil wars. The only solution is to have a centralized power stronger.
