If I slash off the leg of humanity, can it still stand, and will humanity stagger over itself just to make the effort? These were the inquiries of the avant-garde movement. Although, humanity dropped at first, it choices itself up, and stands on its other leg: the leg of riches, fame, and commercialization.

The avant-garde, which by conceive was one of the most controversial art movements, started in France in 1850. The period avant-garde itself means, "advanced guard," and infantry role of the advanced guard, and the function of the avant-garde art action are much of the same. The creative persons of this action desired not only to challenge traditional art but furthermore humanity as a whole. The action desired to pose this dispute in the form of confusing the elite, disturbing business, and just simple incensing lesson society. These creative persons directed at tearing down the rank quo.

Courbet was the first artist to recount himself as a constituent of the avant-garde. Many of his activities resembled what which became the stereotypical avant-garde artist. Courbet was a radical, in and out of jail, tearing down major monuments, and displaying intense egotism. He even went so far as to assertion to be the best creative person in France. When the Saloon denied to show his work, Courbet was unaffected,; he just marched over the road and opened up his own show. The Saloon's rejection of Courbet's work was to be expected, after all Courbet was a realist. The elite society of the time considered of realism as groundwork because of the commonplace subject issue and forms often used. If the subject matter was not high and lofty, magical and mystical, depicting gods and goddesses than the work itself was as useless as the view it depicted. This idea that good art only comes in one style, and that is the method of the top crust, was precisely the lie Courbet and his associates would work to dispel. Millet was one such creative person that motivated other ones to portray the commonplace working class. Millet, associated with the French movement and the Barbonzion School, motivated such creative persons and Vincent Van Gogh and Salvador Dali.
