Introduction

We all have an idea who Andrea Yates is. If not, I am sure somehow you can communicate and have some information about her. Andrea Yates, a registered nurse, wife of Russell Yates, and mother of five children did something which still remained an unsolved question to all of us. Whoever comes to know about the crime Andrea Yates committed, it has bothered them all. After ups and down of her mental state, she finished in drowning her five kids. In June 2001, one by one she drowned her 5 kids in the family toilet bath tub and informed the police about it. This terrible family massacre by a mother generated in favor of, and hatred emotions amongst the general public. Most of the people had one question in mind; was she insane and not able to control of her mental situation at the time of committing such brutal and inhuman act.

A person can be categorized as a legally insane individual under few circumstances. Therefore, one has to proof that, at the time of committing the crime, his or her mental state was not normal. Due to which he or she does not know the type or level of act performing, even if that person know the quality of that act, but did not know was he or she performing something wrong. However, the accused person knows how he or she performed the offense.

Some may think that a mentally ill mother who committed such an act should be judged insane. On the contrary, some have a totally different approach to this case, declaring it as the height of inhuman act. Till now, ten years have passed since she brutally drowned her kids in the bathtub.

At the initiation, of her case, there was a jury who believed Andrea capable to stand trial; however, she was reluctant and disliked the hard work that her lawyer mounted on her behalf even as she was possible of putting to death. Andrea claimed that she is mentally fit, and she established a strong believe that she deserved to die. This showcased her waiting for punishment of her shameful act. The disgraceful attitude came as no surprise for those who were close to her. Hence, such response by her declared as evidence which testify that Andrea had been suffering from mental illness and, in fact, both the prosecution and defense established a belief that she was mentally ill.

In Andrea Yates case, Andrea's defense pointed out by claiming her mental illness was the crucial reason to make her believe that killing her children was the correct course of action. Although, to support the statement Andrea's lawyers asked few specialists to prove their argument, every specialist had a different point of view.
