Critical Review of Article “I'm your teacher, not your internet service provider”

Introduction

“I'm Your Teacher, Not Your Internet-Service Provider” is an essay by Ellen Laird, in which the author accounts her irritations; from the point of view of a teacher of Internet-based distance learning. The primary audience of Laird seems to be probable or instructors new to the sphere of distance learning. Ellen explains that although the possibilities of distance learning are vast, it is not for everyone. Just because it is easy to access the course, that does not mean that the course itself will be easy—and not only because of the subject matter. Individual characteristics and skills play a large part in a student's success with distance learning. The successful distance learner must be disciplined, and have the motivation to keep up with assignments and follow through on projects without encouragement. Solid organizational and time-management skills are required; without the constant reminder and reinforcement provided by attending class twice a week, it is all too easy to let assignments pile up until the experience becomes anything but successful.

She adds that students enrolled in distance-learning courses should be familiar with the technology used in the course, know how to use a computer and the Internet, and try not to become frustrated by technical difficulties when they occur.
