Analytical Case Study: 'Isagani'

Question 1

Isagani, the main focus of this case study, is a five year old male child of Phillipene origins. He has demonstrated aggression towards his teachers, fellow students and other adults not of his family. Not this way from his birth, Isagani has recently stopped talking to his teacher at all, and is very troublesome in class. He becomes upset easily and if he is embarrassed or loses in any games with other children, he lashes out at them physically. Due to such behavior, his teacher has removed him from group situations and 'restricted' his activities with other children. Therefore, Isagani has been referred to the SOS services so that they may carry out a complete mental health evaluation.

It is suspected by his mother Tesoro that Isagani's change in behavior is due to his father, Alejandro's recent death which has left him with his mother and little sister Ada alone with no other concrete avenues of support. They are currently living out of a garage which has been rented from a friend of the family. According to his mother, Isagani had been extremely close to his father, and misses him very much as evidenced when during the mental health assessment, he was asked about his father and he seemed to withdraw from his surroundings, as well showing signs of deep hurt and sadness.

In today's world, there are many different cultures. Culture is part of an infant/child's development. The infant/child's culture helps them develop into who they become when they are adults. A person's culture has influence on their eating, sleeping, and everyday activities. In this paper, the factors that make up a person's culture, how the culture influences infant and toddler development, and whether nature or nurture has a stronger influence will be discussed.

What factors affect cognitive development? According to Carpenter (2008), “Just as a child's body and physical abilities change, his or her way of knowing and perceiving the world also grows and changes.” The way a child perceives his or her world is directly influenced by the world that they are born into. Different cultures have different traditions, morals, and values. In American cultures child labor has seized to exist (Maschinot, 2008).

Bowlby's attachment theory may be applied to Isagani here. There are basically four attachment styles that are useful for determining the frame of mind of such children. These are the secure attachment style, anxious, avoidant and finally the disorganized attachment style. Isagani's ambivalent attachment may be defined as him being unable to use his primary caregiver, Tesoro, as a secure basis. As he does not like it when his mother leaves, he seeks proximity even before such a separation can occur. He is not friendly with strangers, expresses his frustration through anger and does not prefer to leave his mother's side as he feels more secure there.
