CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
This chapter will provide the background, objectives and the layout of the entire dissertation. It will focus upon the aims, objectives and the research questions that will be studied in the research.
Problem Statement
The problem that is being dealt with in this study is related to the Alzheimer disease. The Alzheimer's disease screening and intervention in the state of Georgia is researched upon in detail in this research study.
Background of the Research
The tremendous advances in the medical sciences have led to the aging of population around the world with an increase in the incidence of late life dementia and other related associated with aging. Association for Geriatrics Psychiatry defines dementia as “ a clinical syndrome characterized by global cognitive decline with memory and one other area of cognition affected that interfere significantly with the person's ability to perform the tasks of daily life and meet the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition text revision (DSM-IV-TR) criteria”.
Alzheimers Disease (AD) is a devastating disorder. It is not considered a normal part of aging even though increasing age is an inescapable and pervasive risk factor (Giannakopoulos, Bouras et al. 2008). Alzheimer's disease is a debilitating progressive brain disorder that affects more than fifty percent of dementia cases and is expected to quadruple over the next several decades. The cost and care of Alzheimer's patients is astronomical and continues to increase. Among American adults Alzheimer's disease is the fourth leading cause of death. Alzheimer's disease was first described in 1906 by a German psychiatrist, Dr. Alois Alzheimer (Beatty, 2006). Alzheimer's disease was rarely diagnosed in the early 1900's, however today it is now the leading cause of dementia. Seventy percent of Alzheimer's patients live at home where the caregiver is family or a friend. The stress and burden of caring for an Alzheimer family member can lead to physical, emotional and financial stress (Spurlock, 2005). This chapter provides a history of Alzheimer's disease, pathophysiology, treatment, economic impact, family impact, problem and purpose, definition of terms, and theoretical framework
Aim of the Research
The aim of this research is to assess the symptoms, reasons and treatment of the Alzheimer disease in Georgia.
Research Objectives
Just like other research studies, the current study ...
