Aircraft Run Out Of Fuel And Crash

Fuel starvation and fuel exhaustion (sometimes referred to as fuel depletion) are problems that can affect internal combustion engines fuelled by either diesel, kerosene, petroleum or any other combustible liquid or gas. If no fuel is available for an engine to burn, it cannot function. All modes of transport powered by such engines can be affected by this problem, but the consequences are most significant when it occurs to aircraft in flight. The remainder of this article discusses primarily fuel starvation and exhaustion issues in aviation. There are two main ways that an engine can run out of fuel:

Using all of the fuel. An engine can use all available fuel due to insufficient fuel being loaded for the planned journey or the journey time extended for too long (in the case of an aircraft, due to in-flight delays or problems). Incidents of this type involving aircraft include Air Canada Flight 143, Avianca Flight 52, and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961.

Leaking. In some cases, the fuel tank or the supply piping to the engine leaks and fuel is lost. This can cause engines to starve. Cases of this nature involving aircraft include Air Transat Flight 236.

Some people are scares of traveling in airplanes because they think the plane is going to crash and they are going to die. Some people rather wake up early and travel in a car four hours than travel in an airplane for half an hour. I think airplanes are alot safer than cars for three different reasons. Pilots are trained, planes rarely ever crash, and a plane is alot bigger and harder. And made up of many more parts than a car.

Fist, I think cars are more dangerous because the people behind the wheel of a car are not as qualified as the pilots of an airplane. Pilots have been certified but the FAA to fly an airplane. It takes years of training and they are constantly studying about new updates that are done to the planes, etc. In contrast, to drive a car all you need is a license.

Secondly planes barely crash, it happens every blue moon. Car accidents happen evry minute. and many people suffer injuries and/or die. There are many cars in the highway and usually all it takes is one distracted driver to make a wrong move and it could cost the life of many.

Seven events were due to problems of tank selection. In cases where the engine cuts out at a low height, a switch of tank after the first splutters does not always allow an in-flight restart. In three fuel starvation events, all of them on Jodels, the pilots were unable to say whether the fuel selector was in the forward or aft tank position, the position of the selector being difficult to interpret7.
