African American Slavery

Introduction

The history of African American people is a significant part of the American history. The African American history highlights the black ethnic group in the United States. Most African American has been living in the United States since 1619. There were many blacks that migrated from the Caribbean and they are also considered as black Americans.

Discussion

As we all know, Barrack Obama was the first African American to become the president of unites states. America is a state where African American is discriminated and are deprived from forting rights. The African American civil rights basically was formed to eliminate racial discrimination against African American and to give them their rights. After the elections held in 1876, white Americans regained power and authority over the entire region and created much violence during the elections. (David & Linda, 2009, pp. 20).

Civil Rights Movement (1950-1960)

Therefore, for more than 60 years African were not given voting rights and they were unable to elect anyone who could represent then in congress and local governments. During this period, white people dominated the Democratic Party and had political control over the south region. The Republican Party, that comprised of maximum black people also failed as African American votes were suppressed in the elections. During the time, when African were deprived from their rights, white democrats imposed racial discrimination. By the end of 19th century, white democrats were elected as officials in the entire south region. These events created more problems for African American not only in south but also in other parts of America (Kuhn, 2008)

As a reaction to this African American joined together and started a non violent campaign which gave rights to civil rights movement. Many Jewish communities also supported the civil rights movement. Infact they were the ones that helped Africans a lot in protesting against racial discrimination. Since Jews supported the civil rights movement in north, they were misbehaved and mistreated by many white Americans in the south region. With the passage of time the black community started gaining power against the white democrats. (David & Linda, 2009, pp. 20).

Post Civil War

After the civil war, there were many African Americans that got opportunities and their rights, the black community became stronger and protested against the racial discrimination. With the passage of time many African gained power in American politics. Many African American became member of US senate. African were also given voting rights and got an opportunity to participate in the elections and the politics. After civil rights and protest of so many years, Barrack Obama became the first African American president of United States. At least 95% of African American voted for him and he also received overwhelming response from majority of whites.

Even after civil rights movement over the years we cannot say that African American had made progress politically. Even today 25% black people live below the poverty line. Child poverty has increased and unemployment has gone to another level in ethnic groups. African American are ...
