Learning Outcomes

The subject Methods and Research Designs in claims that, as a result of research design processes, taken in its broader and deeper, independent study, cooperative work, activities, formative assessment, students become able to achieve certain learning outcomes. Such results are more or less operational translation of the objectives and competencies. Following are the learning outcomes.

Recognize and define problem situations in educational settings.

Translate such situations to problems of scientific nature, suitable formulations.

Shape attitudes of scientific rigor to address the problems.

Design and implement the research process, given the nature of the problem and the characteristics of the information available or collected.

Recognize or, where appropriate, provide evidence of the quality of the data-variables-involved in the problem.

Select and apply research and evaluation methodologies appropriate to the nature and type of problems and situations.

To materialize such methodologies in the research design appropriate to the problem and the objectives or hypotheses formulated for resolution.

Using techniques adapted to the nature of the problem, design and data.

Interpret and evaluate the results, discuss and draw conclusions that will improve the problematic situation that caused the problem.

Develop and interpret technical reports and evaluation research.

Introduction

Research design is the plan that provides the logical structure that guides the investigator to address research problems and answer research questions. It is one of the most important components of research methodology. Research methodology not only details the research design to be implemented but includes the approach to measuring variables and collecting data from participants, devising a strategy to sample participants (units) to be studied, and planning how the data will be analyzed. These methodological decisions informed and guided by the research design selected. There are two broad categories of research design: observational and interventional. Each research design emphasizes a different relationship to be explored between variables. The social issue or problem that needs further exploration and study articulated in the research problem statement, which conceptualizes the problem or issue and identifies the main salient variables to be examined.

Research Problem

The research problem is an area of concern that the investigator is interested in exploring. It reflects a gap in knowledge about a social issue or problem discussed in the scientific literature. Often a research problem focuses on a situation that arises out of everyday life, and that calls for a solution, an improvement, or some alteration; it is a problem that needs to be solved. Conceptualizing and describing the social problem lead the investigator to identify the most salient concepts or variables involved; and guide the investigator's thinking about why and how the variables connected to each other. Through this process of articulating and framing the research problem, investigators may discover that little known about an issue or that there is conflicting information about it within the scientific literature. Depending on what known about the research problem, the research questions to be asked; and the purpose and objective of the research study could range from basic, exploratory research to control experiments (Bernard, ...
